March 2006 - this project is the turquoise Jeep Cherokee on this website. This vehicle has been my daily driver and trial ride rig for the past three years. It now has many miles and is in need of some minor modifications. August 2006 - The 1996 Cherokee project. After 3 years of daily driving, many trail rides, friday nights at my shop and more than a few road trips it was time to freshen up the XJ. Here's what we started with: * 1996 Cherokee Sport * 4.0 auto * All the standard power stuff * D30 ARB 4.56 gears * Ford 8.8 ARB 4.56 gears * Slip Yoke, Custom Drive Shafts * 4.5" Rock Krawler short arm kit with 3/4" spacers * Assorted Custom items and skid plates This vehicle has been spot on flawless and far exceeded my expectations as a trail rider and daily driver. My thought was to freshen up the old XJ with some new pieces. But...I drive alot of Jeep vehicles here at work. After a test ride in a customers 2001 Cherokee it occured to me that this newer model is a little quieter and nicer than the older versions. My first upgrade would be to find a 2001 XJ. This was the last year they were made and should be the best, right? So I looked at some moderately priced ones ... high miles and rusty, low mile ones.... expensive. Some time went by, I had collected some parts for this project when I happened upon a low mileage super clean 2001 Grand Cherokee. This is to become the New Daily Driver/Trail Ride Vehicle. The "96" XJ now has a new owner that will continue to trailride with this proven vehicle. |
